Hot Water Heaters Leaking? Call Us! Plumbing FAQ

Parts of the U.S. have what is commonly referred to as "hard water," and people who live in these areas battle the problems that hard water creates. The most common defense against hard water, which is a nuisance but not a health hazard, is to install a home water softener. Water softening involves exchanging the calcium and magnesium minerals present in the water – which cause the hardness – with sodium. As the water softener processes gallon after gallon of hard water daily, the treatment capability of the softener becomes depleted and must be recharged or regenerated. For more on hard water versus soft water systems, please give Harley Plumbing Company a call.

You have a lot to consider when selecting a new water heater for your home. You should choose a water heating system that will not only provide enough hot water but will also do so energy efficiently, saving you money. This includes considering the different types of water heaters available and determining the right size and fuel source for your home. Call one of our trained technicians today to assist you in ensuring that you choose the right water heater for your home.

Foul odors occur from a buildup of food debris within the disposer. To eliminate this odor, turn on the water, turn on the disposal, place ice cubes and lemon or orange peels in the disposer, and run for 30 seconds. Next, squirt a little liquid dish detergent into the disposer while it is still running. Finally, run cold water for about 30 seconds to rinse all the debris away.

Water heaters should be inspected and flushed once a year. You may not be experiencing any problems now, but without proper maintenance, sediment will develop, which can cause your water heater to not function properly. Excessive sediment can lead to your water heater rusting, resulting in a tank leak. Give Harley Plumbing Company a call to schedule your yearly water heater service.

Tips & Helpful Hints

  • Run hot water in your kitchen sink before you start the dishwasher. This practice saves energy and helps you clean your dishes better.
  • Fit all of your drains with strainers to catch any debris, such as hair or food, from going down the drain. Make sure you clean your strainer regularly to keep your pipes clear. This can prevent future clogs from occurring.
  • Do not rinse fats or cooking oils down your kitchen sink. Liquid fats solidify in your cold pipes and can create terrible clogs.
  • If your disposal is jammed or not working properly, try pressing the red reset button at the bottom of the disposal. Most often, this will fix the problem.
  • Flush your water heater annually to remove sediment from the building. This will ultimately increase the lifespan of your water heater and your energy savings.
  • Check your sprinkler system frequently and adjust sprinkler heads so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
  • Make sure you know where your master water shut-off valve is located. This could save gallons of water and prevent damage to your home if a pipe were to burst.
  • If you believe a leak exists, add several drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If it's leaking, the coloring will appear in the toilet without flushing.
  • Schedule a home safety inspection annually to ensure everything is in proper working order.
